☆ a dismal encore: machine gun fellatio - on ice

If Bring it on was Act One, and Paging Mr Strike was the acclaimed Act Two, finale On Ice is the weak encore that fades away as soon as the curtain drops and the lights come back on. The album is longwinded and dull by comparison to the impressive Machine Gun Fellatio discography and the free DVD doesn’t make up for it! I wonder if the title should be changed to On Thin Ice?

‘Hollywood’ and ‘Little Cutie’ come across as (perverted) grade four poems created while learning to rhyme. ‘Best Friend’ is a tasteless and spiteful track about having sex with your ex-partner’s best friend. Don’t get me wrong, a bit of spite and malice is always fun, and a dash of controversy in an album never hurts, but this doesn’t work like ‘Motherfucker on a Motorcycle’ did.

There are no stand out tracks here; defiantly no ‘Rollercoaster’s. The only track which comes close to hitting the mark is ‘Troublemaker’. It’s repetitive, sex charged and hot, and made me want a limousine, a glass of gin and tonic, and a little trouble.

‘Who’s Got da Pills?’ and ‘The Growing’ are kind of fun too. Look out for the not-so-obscure reference to Barry Mann’s ‘Who Put the Bomp’.

The album is not terrible. The sing-a-long tragic drama style that mashes Boy George and Culture Club with Jackass is always a tasty treat away from the commercial tunes pounding out of the radio, but On Ice is no ground breaker. It’s just unfortunate that On Ice doesn’t match the brilliance of Paging Mr Strike.

A few saving graces though: ‘(You’ve Ruined All My) Favourite Songs’ is a good track. And hats should be taken off to the slag off at George Bush: it’s true, “It seems that we’re stuck with a dumb motherfuck in the White House.”

Earlier this year Chit Chat told Rave magazine in an interview that he was keen on seeing the Machine Gun Fellatio concept available for franchise: a Machine Gun in every town. Well, it would seem Chit Chat’s dream to franchise out Machine Gun Fellatio has come true, because, although the band in On Ice may sound like Machine Gun, it’s not the on illicit drug happy great that the earlier stuff was! These in-training MGFers seem to still be far from graduating, maybe by next album they’ll be up to the true Machine Gun Fellatio standard.
